AU Specific History 2.0

  • In 1940, when Amery was 23, Volstov entered WWII to fight against the Germans, and the Dragon Corps was sent over from Volstov where they had been previously fighting their own war against the Ke-Han, leaving the rest of the Volstovic Army on their own.
  • In 1942, Amery, now 25, was presumed killed in action, knocked from the back of his dragon in the middle of a particularly overwhelming battle. It was too dangerous for anyone from the Dragon Corps to go back and retrieve his body, and since no one could possibly survive a fall like that, it was assumed that he perished.
  • While actually killed by his fall into the mountains, Amery's body was essentially preserved by the snow and ice and was later recovered by HYDRA after soldiers had witnessed his fall. He suffered severe injuries including a shattered spine, a broken arm and leg, a fractured skull, overall minor brain damage (if amnesia can be considered minor), and other less serious broken bones. These breaks also caused internal damage and bleeding, though nothing that couldn't eventually be repaired.
  • Considering his injuries and death, [Amery] was at first considered useless. However, attempts to revive him were successful, and aside from some amnesia, he was (mentally, at least) fully functioning. It was too much of a risk that he would further injure himself in that state, so he was put on ice.
  • While they didn't begin to truly repair his injuries until 1944 when HYDRA also got a hold of Bucky Barnes, before that they had started to experiment on Amery. After all, even if they failed, they weren't wasting much, with how injured Amery already was, and if they succeeded, then Amery would be stronger than ever. However, after HYDRA came into possession of Bucky, they began to repair the both of them. Their resemblance and thus combined possible potential was too much to pass up.
  • In the end, their experiments, Zola's version of the super soldier serum, was a success. All of [Amery]'s broken bones were reconstructed and replaced with metal, which includes an entirely metal spine, a metal plate in the back of his skull, metal bones in his right arm and metal bones in his left leg. He retains scars from some of these things, including severe scars all the way down his back and a much milder scar on his scalp, curving from ear to ear above the back of his neck. The only reason that the scars aren't worse, and why the ones on his arm and leg are merely faint lines is the super soldier serum.
  • The amnesia he ended up with from brain damage resulted in him losing large chunks of his life, of course, such as who he was or certain things that he had been through. However, he retained his memories of knowing how to fight, as well as the other skills he had picked up from the Dragon Corps.
  • Though HYDRA knew full well who [Amery] was, they refused to call him by any sort of  proper name, fearing that it would start to bring his memories back, and instead he was eventually given the alias the Winter Dragon. They would have also called him the Winter Soldier, but worried that would have become too confusing. So instead, considering [Amery]'s former place in the Dragon Corps, a new code name was born.
  • In 1954, after Soldier and Dragon were both awakened again, [Amery] was initially trained by various HYDRA personnel, though eventually, as he progressed, his training was entrusted to the Winter Soldier. [Amery] was now stronger, faster, and more durable, along with possessing a scattering of skills but there was a lot that he still lacked. He proved to be a quick learner though and picked up things with ease.
  • In 1957, [Amery] began having dreams of his former life. Mainly dreams of flying and of metal wings, nothing too telling about his former life, but enough to lead from one thing to another. He also began dreaming of falling, which was, of course, how he died. Eventually, his dreams led him to bailing on the end of a mission and not showing up for extraction. Instead, he went to Volstov, where he was eventually found and forcefully brought back by a HYDRA team. When he was returned to HYDRA he was, of course, wiped, made into a blank slate once more.
  • Killing over the years, unstable, etc
  • That thing with killing Fury and Steve.

Headcanon

  • Has a scar across his chest from falling out of a tree when he was a boy. He'd climbed the tree to see his baby sister being born on the second floor of their house.
  • Has a scar on his right ear from a time when Rook hit him with a dart.
  • The scars on his back are sensitive.
  • He cuts his own hair whenever it gets too long. Except he's not very good at it; essentially he just hacks at it, so it ends up looking fairly awful.
